Car Mode App Announced by Nokia - Access Maps, Satellite Navigation, Music and Voice Calls with your In-Car Screen and Speakers

Nokia is pressing the accelerator on building mobile phone capabilities into cars with the release of the Nokia Car Mode app. Nokia Car Mode makes it easier for drivers and passengers to access maps, satellite navigation (provided by Nokia Drive), traffic updates, music and voice calls when they are in vehicles, so there’s no need for a separate music player or satnav. Smartphone features and services are designed and displayed to optimise the usability in the car and avoid driver distraction.

The app, written in Qt, will be available for the Nokia 600, Nokia 700, Nokia 701 and earlier smartphones that have been upgraded to Symbian Belle, this definitely indicate Nokia N8, Nokia E7, C7, C6-01, E6 and X7. It will also be available for Nokia N9. Conversations first reported on Nokia Car Mode when it was known as Terminal Mode back in March.

Nokia Car Mode is the first solution supporting the MirrorLink standard that deeply connects phones to in-car screens, steering wheel buttons and speakers. With MirrorLink consumers can control their smartphones via the car dashboard, as if the device and its apps were integrated into the car itself.

In fact, Nokia smartphones with Nokia Car Mode can be connected to Alpine’s new ICS-X8, a dashboard-mounted unit that lets drivers of supported cars use MirrorLink capabilities.

“MirrorLink is a big leap forward in allowing car drivers to access their favourite smartphone stuff,” said Floris van de Klashorst, Director of Automotive Services in Nokia’s Location & Commerce business. “Users have maps, music and plenty of other features on their phones; MirrorLink unlocks them for when they’re in their cars.”

These apps are very essential and bundled with MS services and all will be free. Lists are below:

  • Microsoft Document Connection - Single view to all documents stored in your phone from email to office apps all will be integrated.
  • Microsoft One Note – A MS SkyDrive sync enable rich note taking with image feature.
  • Microsoft One Note with SharePoint (2012)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint Broadcast – quick browsing of presentation from PC to mobile.
  • Microsoft Lync 2010 Mobile – cost efficient IM, presence, audio and web meetings on your phone

Microsoft Business Apps ScreenShots on Symbian Belle

Yesterday, Nokia has announced the availability of Microsoft Apps for Symbian Belle smart phones. Some screenshots of these Microsoft Apps running on a Nokia Symbian Belle smartphone, check them out after break.

Symbian Belle homescreen showing-up the new Microsoft Application widgets

Microsoft Lync 2010:
“Microsoft Lync is the re-branded and updated version of Microsoft Office Communicator. It provides instant messaging and presence for the corporate environment. Lync is integrated into a number of other Microsoft products and is intended to be a general purpose communication service allowing for better collaboration and unified communications.”
“New in the updated application is support for rich presence. This allows a user to set a specific status message to give additional information about availability. Previously it was only possible to choose from a predefined list (Available, Busy, Away, etc.) In addition, it is now possible to add contacts from the corporate directory and add them into existing groups on the phone. This allows for easier contact management and avoids some of the fiddly set up that was needed in the earlier version of the product.”
Microsoft OneNote:
“The Microsoft OneNote application provides a mobile version of the desktop application. Microsoft describes OneNote as a rich note taking application, with support for embedded images and audio. Notes can be synced using Microsoft SkyDrive (an update in 2012 will deliver Sync via SharePoint). The mobile application for Symbian allows the viewing and editing of notes, including the ability to add images and audio on the phone. There are some limitations, the viewing and layout of data from the desktop application will be streamlined for the mobile screen and entries which use Ink (hand written notes) are displayed as image files, but all key content is displayed and remains editable on the mobile device.”
Microsoft PowerPoint Broadcast:
“Microsoft PowerPoint Broadcast allows the viewing of ‘broadcast’ presentations on the mobile device. For example, this can be used to share and view a presentation during a conference call. Typically, on the phone, broadcasts are activated by following a web link sent via email. On the back end, this can be done using the Microsoft service from within PowerPoint 2010 (Windows Live ID required), or from a SharePoint server via a unified access gateway.”

Microsoft Document Connection:
“Microsoft Document Connection gives easy access to Office files stored on your phone (local storage or email attachments), or on remote SharePoint servers (multiple SharePoint accounts are supported). The list of files can be filtered by date, type and person (by creator or email address). Specific documents can also be marked as favourites, making it easier to find regularly used files.Tapping on a file will open it in Quickoffice. Later in 2012, Quickoffice will be replaced by the Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications currently being developed by Microsoft, which are due to be released next year.”
Microsoft Exchange Active Sync:

“Nokia’s Mail for Exchange is re-branded to Microsoft Exchange Active Sync, bringing it in line with Microsoft’s own naming convention.A number of new features are also added in the updated version. The most noteworthy of these is the introduction of support for multiple Exchange accounts. This means it will be possible to use Exchange ActiveSync functionality for both business and personal use (e.g. Google, Hotmail). The update will also bring more powerful and better performing search functionality, making it easier to find email in your inbox.”

Suite of Microsoft Apps to arrive for Symbian Belle

If you’ve been keeping track of Nokia’s steady decline over the last few years, then you can tell that the company is moving to renew itself by scrapping its own Symbian operating system and adopt Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS instead. Yet, the two companies have collaborated to bring some of Microsoft’s services, including several Office apps and Lync; Microsoft’s VoIP solution.

The roll out of Microsoft’s apps will begin later this year, with a few apps available, and next year with even more apps. In the fourth quarter of 2011, Symbian users should expect Lync; Microsoft’s text, audio and video conversation platform, Office OneNote; which can be used for taking notes on the go, PowerPoint Broadcast; for viewing PowerPoint presentations and Document Connection; which makes it easy to view Office documents stored on the device, as well as on the network using Microsoft SharePoint.

In 2012, other tools will be available, perhaps more familiar to everyday Office users. Word, PowerPoint and Excel will all make the way to the Symbian platform, as well as OneNote sync with SharePoint and SkyDrive, making it much easier to sync notes across different devices running Microsoft’s software. The complete list of apps as described on the Nokia blog are as follows:

  • Microsoft® Lync™ 2010 Mobile – for cost efficient IM, presence, audio and web meetings on-the-go.
  • Microsoft® PowerPoint® Broadcast – quick broadcast of presentations directly from PC to mobile.
  • Microsoft® OneNote™ – rich note taking with images. Syncs with Microsoft® SkyDrive®.
  • Microsoft® Document Connection – single view to documents stored on mobile, including email attachments as well as documents on Microsoft® SharePoint® 2010 sites.

No screenshots or feature sets for any of the upcoming apps have been disclosed, yet this is the first time that Microsoft has developed a version of Office for a mobile platform other than its own. Better yet, all the software we mentioned above will be rolled out through Symbian’s Software Update feature completely free of charge to all users of the latest version of Symbian, codenamed “Belle”.
Nonetheless, Nokia considers, and hopes both the press and users do too, this move a commitment by the company to its declining platform, which allegedly won’t be discontinued any time before 2016, at the earliest:
These updates are yet another confirmation that Nokia has not done making investments and introducing innovation into the Symbian platform. [...] , we will provide software support to Symbian until at least 2016.
Soon, Nokia will begin its transition over to Windows Phone, with devices running the platform which might be introduced as early as later this year. Perhaps this is just the right way to get current users engaged with Microsoft’s new involvement in the once-prosperous handset maker.

Pictures and Videos of Possibly The Nokia 800 and Nokia 801 with Symbian Belle

we don’t like sharing rumors or leaks but sometimes it is good to break this rule in order to help you guys to answer the doubts you have in your mind and to give some little icebreaker. One post related to it is this one, allegedly dubbed as might be the Nokia 800 and Nokia 801, and we hope this might make you more craved for Symbian Belle.

Over at MyNokiaBlog, the current rumor mill are the two unknown devices found on NFC promotion video that was loaded up in new Symbian smartphones. The footage of video came from Symbian events held around the world and this could already signify the answer where this is a pure concept one or a teaser.
Why yes?
They are really no big signs that these unknown devices are Nokia 800 and 801 except only that Nokia already announced the Nokia 700s, 600, and 500 series. So it may help us conclude that the next series might be the 800s and also due to the one-year old Nokia N8, an age that will somehow evoke Nokia to produce the successor to it.
Why not?
The things that made these two devices looks so conceptualize are the back design which doesn’t hold any camera dashboard or island for Xenon flash or optics that we’re expecting to be present. Yet I might be also wrong on this one as technology advancement are really fast today. Maybe a flat back for design goals or whatsoever. Another reason why it’s a pure concept is because this could just been made for NFC promotional videos.

And yes, the video somewhat depicts two different devices. The edgy and the curvy one, just noticed on the front or facade design. Booth looks like inherited the design of Nokia X7 back and the curved front of Nokia N9.
But what ever these phones will be, concept or not, still these two phones had hooked me to them! Stunning exterior and superb Belle experience in one!
What do you think, CONCEPTS or NOT?

Nokia N9 Coming Soon to UAE Region and Pakistan

Nokia’s Pakistan centric website is showing that Nokia N9 is coming to UAE region which also includes Pakistan. Pakistan historically had been a good market for Nokia where Nokia had been synonymous with mobile phones and the country had been on Nokia’s radar for long . Now the only question is when it will be launched , with Malaysia and Mexico to receive it soon, Pakistan does not seem that far behind.

Nokia X7 Going to be Available in Different Colors??

Over at mynokiablog they must have eyes EVERYWHERE, one of their tipsters found these two pics of a white Nokia X7 in wild. Because of Nokia's propensity to make all their phones available in different colors, I'm thinking this the 2nd of many color choices to come for the X7.

New Nokia Phone or Concept Phone leaked?

Over at mynokiablog they found a new concept phone or perhaps even a just a rendered phone buried in demo video on the Nokia 700. It is a very sexy looking phone with edge to edge glass and curved screen like the N9.

I'm guessing the phone is just a good rendering for now.

If you want to see it in the video the video is below.

N9 Coming to Australia for Sure...US Maybe?

So there it is, proof that everyone in Australia will be getting the N9 in October of this year. As for the US there was a period of about ten minutes today where Amazon.com's US site had a "placeholder" up for both the 16gb and the 64gb model with the old coming soon on the page. I was not at a place to grab a screenshot for you, and by the time I was at my computer...it was gone. (sorry about that folks) But that does mean that Amazon.com US has spot reserved for the N9 and is planning on selling it. (hopefully soon)

If you want to see the full press release of the Australia announcement from Nokia I posted it after the break...

Nokia N9 "all-screen" smartphone available through all Australian operators and major retailers

Sydney, Australia – 1 September 2011. The Nokia N9, which was announced in Australia at the end of June, will be sold through Optus, Telstra, Vodafone and all major retailers[1].

The stunning high-end smartphone, which will be available in October 2011, will come in black, blue and pink with a RRP AUD$799.

Gavin Williams, marketing director, Optus Consumer said, "Optus has had a very strong relationship with Nokia over a number of years and we're excited to continue this with the Nokia N9. Our customers have shown a lot of loyalty to Nokia as a brand and manufacturer of quality products in the past and we expect that to continue with this highly impressive smartphone device."

"It's clear that Nokia fans have something quite special to look forward to in the Nokia N9," said Andrew Volard, director, Telstra Mobile Products. "It's fast, simple to navigate and features a beautiful design that sets the N9 apart in a crowded smarpthone market. We're looking forward to making it available to our customers on Australia's largest and fastest national mobile network."

"The Nokia N9 is where form meets function- this is a sleek, stylish and highly intuitive smartphone, offering customers a device that looks as good as it feels," said Ross Parker, general manager of Devices and Pricing at Vodafone. "The N9 will be Nokia's flagship device for 2011 with good reason, and we are thrilled to be delivering the N9 to our customers on Australia's best value mobile plan range, Vodafone Infinite."

The Nokia N9 is all about design and simplicity. It features a 3.9-inch AMOLED panel with a ClearBlack display, which makes the dark bits darker and the colours much more vivid.

The casing is made from material commonly used in ice hockey helmets and the paint is bled right through the material so the colour remains even if you scratch it. The material also allows for a superior antenna performance which means better reception, better voice quality, fewer dropped calls and a higher GPS accuracy.

The Nokia N9 "all-screen" design means there is no physical home button. Instead, it has touch and swipe gestures which lets you navigate around the homescreen.

The user interface is designed around the things people typically do the most – use apps, socialise and multitask. There are three homescreens, which are arranged in a carousel. The first homescreen is for accessing your apps; the second for social networking, calling, texting and calendar; and the final screen shows which applications are open. The screen can be pinched or zoomed to show either four or nine open app icons.

The Nokia N9 also comes with an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics, wide-angle lens, HD video capture and large lens aperture for greater performance even in lowlight conditions. It is also NFC-enabled, which allows the user to share images and videos between devices by simply touching them together.

Rounding the package is Nokia's free turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation with voice guidance and Nokia Store, which gives you access to the apps you need.

Nokia 703 Windows Phone, Photo and Specs!

Well there it is, the rumored Nokia 703 Windows Phone from a couple days ago. I really like the design of it, at 3.7" it is a slightly smaller version of the Sea Ray/N9.

Here are the specs

  1. 3.7″ LCD 452×800 display

  1. 5Mp Camera

  1. 720p HD video at 30FPS

  1. 8Gb Storage

  1. 512Mb RAM.

This is pretty much what I reported spec wise a two days ago, expect for the camera...The camera only being a 5Mp is a huge disappointment for me. I truly was expecting an 8Mp like on the C7, and 701. While there is nothing mentioned on the processor speed one would have to assume that it is the 1Ghz processor that is in the 701.

So there it is the first Nokia Windows Phone. (maybe) What do you all think?
